Do I need to create an account?

If you just want to read an article, then you need not create an account. But it is always better to create an account. You cannot write an article, make additions or changes, ask questions, or join a discussion unless you are logged-in.

Having an account allows you to watch your articles, talk about your article, talk to other article owners, etc.
