[edit] Basil (Ocimum basilicum and Ocimum tenuiflorum aka Tulsi)

Hey i was just talking to this friend of mine on couchsurfing who lives in China and he said he'd shown his balcony garden to a friend who said that the local basil he was growing was called Rehangul in Uighur, and that it was very popular in Uighur cuisine. He smelled the Italian one and said that "thats different", but pronounced the Rehangul a perfect specimen with the right smell. It is slightly purple with purple flowers. Some of his Uighur female students have Rehangul as a first name.

Was Rehangul the lady in the Thousand and One Nights Stories (Sinbad the sailor etc) who told the interesting stories to the king each night to save getting her head cut off? (The king wanted to hear the next story the following night, so she lived a long time).

But hey Gul in persian or urdu mens rose, doesnt it? Rehan , i googled and found that it means all sorts of aromatic herbs, especially the basil, (and it also means compassionate), so would that translate into Rehan-gul=Rose basil?
