[edit] comment on bhupen khakar article

this article reads more like a personal opinion. opinions very easily differ and lead to disagreements. wikipedia.org had a great deal of trouble with this for many years, and their solution has been to insist on rigorous levels of attribution ('proof' or 'source', as it were) in all the articles. this way, writers don't blog as much as log facts here. we may take this into account for the subjects copperwiki covers, even better if it is done as a matter of policy.

Don’t know who you are, but his is far from a blog write. In fact this is a toned down academic paper i had presented in a seminar. The pointing out of Bhupen's sexuality and the mainstream art’s refusal to engage with it in a discursive fashion is not my opinion, but an observation made by Bhupen himself. Moreover (and more importantly?) there is no clear cut definition of the word fact. In case Bhupen is included in an anthology of gay artists then will suddenly this write become factual???

[edit] critics view or information?

Not familiar with Bhupen Khakhar's work, I needed to read eight lines to know what he does. After reading the first few paras, I realised you are trying to highlight the fact that his gay paintings did not evoke the kind of controversy one would have expected ( what would have one been expecting though and on what premise?) Have I got it correct?

I would have appreciated it if I knew within the first two lines of reading the article that he painted on gay themes; he was himself a gay and he was well known ( supported by facts). The facts about his paintings and life come at the end of the piece. I would have liked to read about it in the beginning before being introduced to the debate on his success.

Incidentaly, how was he viewed by critics then -- India and later abroad? Were there any gay painters before him -- names and period? Did they face any kind of controversy?

And then you could question if his success was due to the fact that he never made a secret about his being gay or his paintings? I am also not clear how caste-system in Indian society is linked to the acceptance or rejection of gays? You could also introduce what is the caste system in Indian society and its implication before you talk about their views and acceptance.

Rahul, since I am reading the piece for information, I would have liked the language to be simpler and the sentences to be shorter with a clear idea of what each paragraph was conveying. This would make a great reading for a critic piece for a Sunday paper, where the readers want analysis and already have the information.

I would like more information of history of gay paintings in India and abroad, period, how were they recieved and what is the present scenario like.

Regards Mridu

hi, you make sense...will make some chnages...but however things like history of sexuality and history of gay paintings in India and abroad, period, how were they recieved, will only have to be hyperlinked out. currently struggling with hyper liking in this software. there are certain other doubt regarding an encyclopedic approach..but let me make the changes first and then we will take it from there
